Total Film magazine (May 2005)
Last month, Brad Pitt took time out from a hectic Ocean's Twelve promo tour to chat about Fight Club. But he knew we wanted more - so he dropped us an email about The Greatest Film Of Our Lifetime.
Subject: Fight Club
From: Brad Pitt

Hi guys,
Answers to those questions...
Where are you at the moment?
Currently homeless.
At the Venice Film Festival premiere you turned to Ed Norton and said, "That's the best movie I'm ever going to be in." Do you still think that?
True Story. Edward and I were the only ones laughing. We were next to the grand marshal, who started to cover his eyes 15 minutes in. Ten minutes later he walked out, which made us laugh ever harder. We were howling, while the rest of the theatre was silent. When it was over, I turned to Ed and said that and he said the same. But I was stoned out of my head.
Fincher cast you during Meet Joe Black. Did you have any doubts about Fight Club?
The better question is, "Why'd I do Meet Joe Black?"
Fincher said the fist week of the shoot didn't go brilliantly.
That's hilarious. I didn't work the first week, so perhaps that was Fincher and Edward feeling each other out. Fincher is Tyler Durden, by the way.
What made you think of Helena Bonham Carter for Marla?
Truthfully, it was the nude scene in The Wings of The Dove. It was libido-inspired. Also, there was something irreverent in the theme of the movie - taking this classical actress and burning the corset. She was brilliant.
Is Tyler a sort of Antichrist, in that he preaches destruction?
The message of destruction was simply about how we got so far off-track that we had to start over. Actually, I do have plans to play the Antichrist in the future. I'm going to start right after I finish playing the Easter Bunny.
Did you agent worry about what Fight Club would do for your image?
My image was destroyed years ago.
What reaction did you get from industry people?
After screenings it would just be dead quiet. We did our job.
